Patient Sings Beautiful Opera During Brain Surgery

Brain surgeries are risky and highly complex procedures. Doctors cut you up and tinker with your brain, careful not to damage any parts that control specific bodily functions. To do this, the patient has to be conscious, so the surgeons know they won’t be messing up anything in there, and at times ask the patient to execute specific tasks just to make sure everything’s going to be fine after the procedure.

Slovenian opera singer Ambroz Bajec-Lapajne was diagnosed with an operable brain tumor. The doctors asked him to sing, so they could make sure there won’t be any post-op issues.

Brain Op

The professional opera, concert and choral singer sang Schubert’s “Gute Nacht,” in different keys to determine if he could still recognize them. Although he hit a bump on the road starting at the 2:40 mark, he still managed to recover, and it was absolutely beautiful.

Ambroz has since recovered remarkably and is back to singing again a year later. What a trooper.
