A drunk driver who crashed in a Chicago suburb had his life saved by a bystander who happened to see the accident from his home last month. Jose Martinez, 58, was seen assisting a 34-year-old man who was stuck inside a burning vehicle in Aurora, Illinois on March 31. Dash-cam footage that was released on Wednesday shows him pulling the unidentified man.
Martinez darted from his house across the street around midnight when the accident took place. Devin Johnson, 29, happened to also be in the area and quickly came to lug the man out of harm’s way while authorities searched for more victims.
Joel Olvera, a 25-year-old from Aurora, also helped out at the scene. ‘To say Jose’s actions were heroic and brave are an understatement,’ the department said in the Facebook video posting on Wednesday. ‘Had he not taken immediate action, the driver would not have lived. Devin should also be commended for assuring the man was out of harm’s way. Outstanding job, gentlemen.’
The 34-year-old driver was charged with a DUI and a number of other traffic offenses, according to police. They shared that he suffered burns and other minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
