Do not do to others what you would not want them to do to you, as the Chinese saying goes. An unruly tourist has been punished by instant karma after trying to push a monkey into a pond at a Chinese temple. The animal quickly turned around and attacked him, scratching his hand and face.
The unnamed man was visiting the Xitian Temple in Dehua County in East China’s Fujian Province yesterday, according to Chinese news outlet Bjnews. He tried to push one of the resident monkeys, reportedly a rhesus macaque, into a pond for a laugh. Footage taken by another visitor shows the man creeping up on the unsuspecting animal, which is perched on a metal railing next to the body of water.
The man suddenly shoves the monkey, which cries as it falls over the railing. But a second later the primate leaps back up again at shocking speed. The monkey then chases the man as other visitors laugh. The video shows him running into the temple where he believed the monkey would not give chase but it does.
The monkey’s clan mate rushes to its rescue and enters the building to attack the man. A temple employee told Bjnews that the monkeys scratched the tourist, but there were other people inside the room, and they helped drive the monkeys away. The tourist later shared a photo of his bloodied hand and face.
