There are some species of birds that have the ability to mimic the sounds they hear. The most common are crows and parrots, which are impressive by themselves. But did you know there is one that trumps them all?
The lyre bird of Australia is wonderfully gifted with impressive pipes, and uses its extraordinary abilities of mimicking what it hears primarily to attract mates. It’s so good at it that when it copies the calls of other species of birds, it tricks the females into coming to see what’s working them all up.
However, the lyre bird is losing its home to deforestation. You’ll get to hear the ugly truth when it perfectly mimics the sound of a chainsaw, which they will only hear from humans cutting down trees.
